Mrs. V's Musichology

(the wonderful world of Elementary Music and Technology)

Tuesday (9/25/14):

Fifth grade collected their data from their Lunar Lander findings and posted them on their Prezi documents. They worked hard to get this done, and then comment on each other's Prezi. We discussed the importance of online citizenship and to T.H.I.N.K. before we post. T-is it True? H-is what I'm posting helpful? I-is what I'm posting inspiring? N-is what I'm posting necessary? K-is what I'm posting kind? Tomorrow students will post pictures of their Lunar Landers on their Prezis.

Fourth grade calculated the cost of their Dream Vacation. They had to budget

  • plane fare
  • accommodations
  • taxi service
Tomorrow students will budget food costs.

Ms. Beedy's second grade class

  • Learned about Johann Sebastian Bach.
  • Viewed: http://www.pianolessons4children.com/composers/bach.php
  • Listened to: Toccata and Fugue in D minor for organ (one of the most famous of Bach's pieces)

  • Reviewed Do, Re, Mi
  • Discussed So, La, and Mi
  • Played Acha Backa

Mrs. Naessen's class worked on Do Re Mi and postures:
Ms. Snyder's class  played the Solfa game:
If I sing "so la mi" in that exact order, they do not echo.
All students stand. If they echo correctly with hand signs to the best of their ability, they keep playing. If not, they are out. If anyone even begins to sing after I sing "so la mi," he/she is out. I tell everyone not to argue and not to tell on anyone else. We play this game for only a few minutes, and I minimize any winning and losing. I tell them it doesn't really matter. We are just practicing our singing.
Third graders also played "Clock Rhythm." Place rhythms around a drawn clock and play the rhythms at each hour. Students guess which "hour" is played. When one guess, he/she becomes "it" and then they clap a rhythm. It chooses a person to tell them which "hour" was clapped.

Mrs. Parmenter, Ms. Ferden, Mrs. Hollinshead's classes learned what a drum major does in the band. We practiced following what the "leader" did with our instruments. We also learned about Bach as did the other classes today.

Mrs. Baker's Pre-school worked on keeping a steady beat. We marched around the classroom with rhythm instruments, to the tune of Stars and Stripes. We marched and clapped.
We also sang:

  • Wheels on the bus
  • Rags
  • Put Your Finger In The Air
  • If You're Happy And You Know It

Monday (9/29/14):

Fifth grade had their final activity with the physical Lunar Lander. Students dropped each Lunar Lander from 1, 1.5, and 2 feet drops. They marveled at their engineering, what could have been improved. They learned that "appearances" had no affect on the effectiveness of their Lunar Lander's performance. Data was gleaned and recorded on team Prezis.

Fourth grade learned how to access rainfall tables for their Dream Vacation. Students discussed what impact rainfall would make on their decisions to travel. They posted their results on their team Prezis.

Ms. McVittie's and Mrs. Farlee's second grade class

  • Learned about Johann Sebastian Bach.
  • Viewed: http://www.pianolessons4children.com/composers/bach.php
  • Listened to: Toccata and Fugue in D minor for organ (one of the most famous of Bach's pieces)

  • Reviewed Do, Re, Mi
  • Discussed So, La, and Mi
  • Played Acha Backa

Mrs. Postema's and Mrs. Nurenberg's classes worked on Do Re Mi and postures:
Mr. O'Rourke's and Mrs. Joll's classes played the Solfa game:
If I sing "so la mi" in that exact order, they do not echo.
All students stand. If they echo correctly with hand signs to the best of their ability, they keep playing. If not, they are out. If anyone even begins to sing after I sing "so la mi," he/she is out. Friday (9/26/14):

Fifth grade worked on Moby Max which is aligned with Core Curriculum. They scored quite positively as reflected in the chart below.
Fourth grade worked diligently on their Dream Vacation. They worked to answer three questions:
  1. What is the country's capital?
  2. What are the names of two major cities in this country?
  3. What are the names of two major airports in this country?
Once they had completed these questions, they too, were able to sharpen math skills on Moby Max.

Ms. McVittie's and Mrs. Farlee's classes worked on Keyboarding lessons today. We recorded their one minute timings on a Google Doc. Second grade has a goal of 5 words per minute. We will work each week to reach and exceed this goal.

Mrs. Postema and Mrs. Nurenberg's classes worked to enhance their keyboarding skills by once again exploring the Dance Mat Typing web page. Each level is recorded weekly to monitor progress.

Mrs. Joll's and Mr. O'Rourke's classes worked toward their third grade goal of 10 words per minute. They posted their scores on Google Docs so that each week they can observe their progress.

Thursday (9/25/14):

Fifth grade continued work on their Lunar Landers. They have to be careful not to constrict their astronauts to the capsule by any means. This takes some careful engineering!
Students worked on individual assessment through Moby Max, and later earned a few free minutes on Mrs. V's Tech Page.

Fourth grade worked on their Dream Vacation assignment. They looked up some places online. Then they began researching their choice destination. Their behavior also dictated that they were able to change their Dojo Avatar. They especially enjoyed this!

Ms. Beedy's class worked on Edmodo, and began their "Back To School" assignment in which they detailed items about themselves to their classmates. They used Edmodo to sent text to each other. This was an enjoyable activity!

Mrs. Naessens' class worked on

  • learning to log onto Edmodo (this is a big step learning Usernames and Passwords!)
  • keyboarding: http://www.powertyping.com/rain.shtml
  • preparing for Kindergarten students coming in next, in the computer lab
Mrs. Hollinshead, Mrs. Parmenter, and Ms. Ferden's classes worked on Mouse Manipulation. We:

Ms. Snyder's class brainstormed idea for "My Box" a Next Day collaboration lesson. We used Popplet to do this. We are creating a project in which we are going to dream up an imaginary project that will benefit our community.

Wednesday (9/24/14):

Fifth grade worked on their Lunar Landers. They brainstormed what needed to be done to drop their Landers without the Landers breaking apart. Marshmallows are representing astronauts, and one group of students opted to use a rubber band for a safety belt!

Fourth grade worked on their Dojo points again, and attempted to change their avatars as they've earned enough points to do so. Tomorrow they will be able to spend more time on this, but with the abbreviated schedule today, it was impossible to get to. We did get into teams as we worked on our "Dream Vacation" project in which we will find out how to budget money for a dream destination.

Ms. McVitte's and Mrs. Farlee's classes:

  • viewed their Dojo points as behavior dictated
  • logged onto Edmodo
  • continued their "All About Me Project" on Prezi (where they type in information about themselves)

Tuesday (9/23/14):

Fifth grade began a collaborative assignment in which they will be engineering a "Lunar Lander" using household items. They are using physics as they design their object. Today they brainstormed their Lunar Lander.
Fourth grade began a "Next Day Lesson" via Edmodo. Their assignment entails going to a destination of their choice with a set amount of money. Today they completed a "Rank and Reason" activity in which they gave reason to why they would choose a country. They compared their ranking with classmate's reasoning's.
